Shots Fired inside Canadian Parliament Building

Armed RCMP officers head towards the Langevin Block on Parliament Hill

          Just hours after Canada raised its terror threat level responding to another attack on a Canadian soldier, two soldiers on guard at a war memorial in Ottawa came under fire from a man carrying a rifle. One of the soldiers, Cpl Nathan Cirilo died of his injuries. The shooter then continued into the Parliament building, where he engaged in a shootout with police during which he was shot dead. The city was placed on lock down immediately after the shooting. While it is not confirmed, it is likely that these attacks are related to Canada's decision to join a U.S. led coalition against ISIS.

           Prime Minister Steven Harper said the attacks would only strengthen the Canadian resolve and their fight against terrorism. He was quoted saying that there was "[The terrorists] will have no safe haven". In a telephone call, Barack Obama reaffirmed the alliance between the two nations and condemned the attacks.

Questions: ISIS has threatened multiple attacks on North America and other nations who are in the US led coalition. Is this the first of many attacks on North America? How can the U.S. and other allies help prevent attacks similar to this one?

I like Prime Minister Harper’s comment that these attacks only strengthen their resolve in joining the coalition against ISIS. I hope that countries that have not yet joined will join the coalition because they should now recognize that these terrorist groups must be stopped. The world should not be living in fear of terrorists. The attacks will only get worse, until it gets better. The challenge is that the rest of the world needs to understand the urgency of the situation and the power of the ISIS.

I honestly doubt that ISIS had any say in this attack at all. They are currently fighting a multiple front war all while trying to maintain their own laws in the regions they control. All they did was give influence toward this criminal who believed that it was his duty to fight for them. ISIS is an ideology that is loosely based on the teachings of Islam and uses the Quran to justify their brutish methods. Apparently this power is attractive to some as many have tried to reach ISIS controlled territory from as fas as Colorado. The shooting in Ottawa is a tragedy that did the right thing in vilifying the perpetrator and glorifying the officers, and sets the positive model. The Sargent-at-Arms was an action star through the entire incident, placing his life at risk and doing a freaking dive while shooting at the perp. If we take a breath we can realize that ISIS is not as powerful as some sources want us to think but instead their are some deranged people who are willing to sacrifice everything for their own twisted mindset.

@Catherine
The attacks will not get worse. This was an isolated incident of an addict and radical on his own accord. And 9/11 was the worse attack, that dragged into a decade long war. The only thing worse would be a dirty bomb in either continental Europe or U.S.W We also need to realize that there can only be unconditional surrender as they are unwilling to cease-fire because they effectively have no control over their front line soldiers.
