Progression of Marijuana?

Legalize it? -Not quite. However, members of Congress have asked Obama to move Marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule II drug. The difference is, Schedule I drugs are classified as having no medicinal value, such as Heroin or LSD. While Schedule II drugs, such as methamphetamine and cocaine, are considered to have a medicinal use.

However small the request may be,(18/535) do you think it is a request Obama will actually look at/take action on? Do you think this is too radical of a movement for society? Do you believe giving Marijuana possession a smaller consequence would encourage more people to use the drug?

I believe that this could be a way to keep marijuana illegal federally while keeping the supporters of legalization somewhat happy. Instead of legalization, rescheduling marijuana could just prolong the process and make the marijuana law even more confusing. I think that the only real effect this could have would be reducing the consequences for getting arrested for marijuana possession or sale. It would be interesting to see how this compromise would be received by the public because I would guess that most people would rather have it as a black or white issue (legalized or not).

Thanks for giving me another source for my research paper Jon, I owe you one. I feel like although this is a win for pro-pot people, it could also benefit anti-pot people. Would rebelious teens take a drug in the same category as cocaince or meth or a category with LSD? I don't think this will be very big but it is definitely the start of something that will become big. Nancy Grace will definitely say something about it on her show. I get the feeling that Obama will keep an eye on how Colorado and Washington do for a while to see if the decriminalization of marijuana is the right thing to pursue at a national level. Cool photo.

Considering there is a use for medical marijuana, it should be changed to a schedule II drug. Doctor understanding for the way the drug works has changed, so the laws should change as well. I don't have any research, but I am pretty sure marijuana has more of a medical use than cocaine and meth. Whether you or for are against legalization, based on the facts it should be change to a schedule II drug

I agree with Connor, that since a lot of people are either Pro Drug or Anti Drug, a compromise such as this would be a good way to keep both "halves" satisfied.

I really don't think that changing the schedule of marijuana will have any effect on the public at large. Most Americans are entirely unaware of the legal differences in the various illegal drugs, and many who would like to use marijuana do so already. Legality seems to have little do with use at this point.
However, if pro-legalization people want to consider it a small win, then so be it. I just don't think this will have much of a broad effect on the battle as a whole.
