The pirates are not linked directly to any terrorists

The US hasn't found any direct ties between East African pirates and terrorist groups, but it continues to search for signs of links between the two factions in the wake of the recent Indian Ocean hijacking. According to the article this post is liked to, "military and counterterrorism officials say that in the transient world of Somalia's combative coastal dwellers, a Somali clansman can be a fisherman one day, a pirate the next, and a weapons trafficker the following day". This sounds a lot like the vietnam war to me, where a man could be a vietcong by night, and a simple villager by day. I do not believe the US stands a chance of wiping out piracy or terrorism, but I am shocked that the pirates would attack a US vessel after centuries of not doing so. There must be a reason behind this bold act. If they are in some way connected to a terrorist group, that might explain, but beyond that...any ideas?

I think that the pirates who attacked the Alabama and who kidnapped Captain Richard Phillips either didn't know what they were doing or are a little stupid. These pirates have been attacking ships for months and we just haven't been involved because they haven't attacked any of our ships. But now that they have one of our people that makes us involved with this. Somalia's government can not control these pirates and they are attacking and killing people from other countries. How do you punish these people without really getting involved in their country? And now what happens if we get Phillips back, or god forbid they kill him? Do we just say, dang that sucks and move on or do you get involved in this country? I think that either the UN or the ICC should step in because if this gets any bigger, if the pirates start banning together, then we will have a bigger problem on our hands.

Just kidding the captain was rescued! YAY! But still, now what? Obama said "he was pleased that Phillips was rescued, adding that the United States needs help from other countries to deal with the threat of piracy and to hold pirates accountable." Now how are we going to do that? I'm guessing that we aren't going to be hearing about pirates again until they attack one of our ships again, meanwhile Somalia will still have the threat of pirates in their country. I got my info from this article http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/piracy.

Lauren C. Strojny- How can one differenciate between pirates and terrorists. Both are looking out for themselves or a higher leader. "It was a revenge," Hassan Mohamud told a Somali journalist. "The U.S. ship escaped by a matter of chance." The pirates wanted revenge after the US killed three of their pirates, for holding hostage Richard Phillips. In my eyes anyone who can seek revenge and goes after anyone they want something from, and doesnt care if they harm the innocent is a terrorist. So we dont know if they were with a terrorist group, couldnt they be considered their own terrorist group? The US as well as all other countries that have had trouble with the pirates need to take action but not necessarily make them priority.
