In Familiar Cycle, Trump Laments Texas School Shooting and Vows Action

Nine students and a teacher were killed Friday morning in a shooting at Santa Fe High School in the southeastern Texas city of Santa Fe. It's the 22nd school shooting in the US in 201810 people are dead, a law enforcement official said. Nine of those killed are students and one a teacher. Two law enforcement officers are among those injured. At least 13 people have been hospitalized. Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, the suspect, appeared before a judge in Galveston County via video from the county jail. He is being charged with capital murder and aggravated assault of a public servant. He was denied bond and not asked to enter a plea. President Trump addressed the shooting at an unrelated White House event, saying: "This has been going on too long in our country." Trump is once again promising to make sure people who don't deserve to have guns should not possess them. He has said this many times in the past, and let's see if he holds good on his promise this time.

Questions:
1. Will President Trump hold good on his promise about gun control this time?
2.  What is your opinion about the 2nd amendment?
3. What steps should be taken by all schools, to help prevent such incidents in the future?

I really hope that Trump will do something about this soon. His statement about events like these "going on too long in our country" doesn't show much about what he plans to do because it is easy for someone to say something like that and fail to actually take action to fix the problem. Schools need to be prepared and teach students and teachers what to do in case something were to happen. However, I don't think that arming teachers would be a good idea to prevent these incidents because it introduces too many other problems that would be harmful to the learning environment. I think that the March For Our Lives was a great movement that raised awareness and helped people to be more involved in this issue.

Trump's statement is a feel good statement on his part. Obviously we all know this by now. The real question is how we can stop these school shootings from reoccurring. I really hope he does his part and strengthens gun control, although in no way am I saying that guns should be banned. Schools should start to implement teachings on how to react in case of a school shooting emergency. However, in case of a shooting on campus I feel like it's every man for himself. Arming teachers is not a good idea, because proper training is needed and I certainly don't trust teachers with armed weapons. Raising awareness is the main thing so I definitely agree with Natalie.

I hope Trump will take action on this. However, it is important to realize that Trump also needs support for his beliefs in order to gain action. It is very upsetting to see yet another school shooting after all the talk about gun restriction. The fact that the shooter only used a shot gun and a pistol really shows how dangerous even the "least deadly" guns can be. Furthermore, I think arming teachers is not the answer. I think it would create a pretty uncomfortable school environment.

I hope that Trump means what he says because all these consistent shootings keep getting worse and worse every single time. I think it's time that action is finally taken in order for students, parents, teachers, and security to be safe.

Trump made no promises of bringing gun control reform. All he did was allude to the possibility that his administration would consider doing so, which they probably won't if past action/inaction is any indication. I personally think the 2nd amendment is somewhat outdated, I would not go so far as to say this amendment should be repealed, but it is far to easy for many citizens to access firearms.

Gun reform should definitely be in the works in Congress right now, but their ideas on gun reform could differ from the agenda of liberal California. The second amendment is not a bad thing idealistically but in modern times, with the attention drawn upon these school shootings I believe that such incidents are going to become more common (people do crave attention). I'm sure that the founding fathers did not foresee this outcome either. Schools should pay more attention to the welfare of their students as a first defense (gun regulation should come second). However, many schools are underfunded and many background checks cannot detect the frustrations of a child when the adult wants to purchase a gun. These schools shootings reveal the gaps in the school system and inability to control guns.

Gun reform should be the priority of Congress, however, a large conservative backlash and immense NRA power often stop any legislation limiting guns from passing. After countless school massacres in the past 10 years the toll should be enough to inspire change, however the large campaign support both financially and culturally often surmount the best interests of American Students.

I think like many presidents and governments before, when these mass shootings happen, a lot of promises and things are made that are simply too hard to make into a reality. Because of the very differing views people have on gun reform, this will take a very long time, and might not even pass. Like many, I think that the second amendment is a good idea, but it seems to have lots of holes that the founding fathers did not see, so it is a bit outdated. However, I think that we should still be able to have the right to keep arms somehow. All schools should have more training on what warning signs might occur, and the mental health of students. I also think that schools can have special drills and preparation for these situations to be better prepared.
