During a rally on Thursday, President Trump criticized the Academy Awards for
bestowing their top prize to Parasite, a South Korean movie. He asked “what the hell
was that all about” when stating that the winner was a movie from South Korea. He
even goes further to state how “we got enough problems with South Korea with trade.”

Parasite, a movie on class discrimination and greed and how it would affect relationship
between the very wealthy Park family and poor Kim family. Parasite has also made history
by becoming the first foreign language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars earlier this
month. They had also received Oscars for Best Director, in which Director Bong Joon Ho
also made history by becoming the first Korean director to win the Oscar, Best Original
Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. Many people were thrilled at how well
Parasite did especially considering the lack of diversity in Hollywood this year.

I personally had the chance to watch Parasite recently and I had enjoyed the movie so
much I watched it three times... in one night. I thought that it was a well directed movie
with a very interesting plot. I admired how it had made such a resonating comment on
society, the socioeconomic class status and the disparity between different classes. It was
a well made movie with amazing cinematography (in my opinion) and I think that it fully
deserved the Oscars that it earned, thus making it very disappointing that Trump would be
so quick to discredit the movie because it was a foreign film especially when it seems as if
he hadn’t even watched it since he stated himself, “Was it good? I don’t know.” Though
disappointing in the way that he acted, I’m not very surprised by it. Hopefully in the future
we will be able to see more representation and diversity in the movies being nominated,
actors, actresses, as well as directors.

Have you watched Parasite? What did you think of it and do you think it deserved the Oscar’s it received?
Do you think foreign media or culture is making an impact on American culture? How so?

I think this its really great that Parasite did so well in the Oscars because not only did it have such an impactful, realistic message, but also it made people more aware of South Korean life. By doing so, I think Americans will realize that what they might know about a culture is possibly stereotypical and surface-level, and these films will provide them with an opportunity for their understanding to branch out. By also getting so much buzz at the Oscars, I think it will persuade more people to watch the movie and learn about South Korea. Additionally, I definitely think that foreign media and culture are making an impact on American culture - I mean look at K-pop for example. By experiencing new cultures and different layers of it, I hope to believe that it creates a more inclusive nation.
I have watched Parasite. Personally, it’s not my type of movie but I did enjoy it; I would probably watch it again if the opportunity comes up. I agree with you, the cinematography was absolutely amazing. I didn’t realize how many hidden symbols/connections there were in the movie until I watched a video after that analyzed the movie and explained everything. It definitely deserves the Oscar’s it received. The director wanted to focus on what he thought was important to bring to light to others and he did so in an excellent way. Additionally, I’m so happy to see all these different Asian cultures being more common here, even though it is not always accepted. I’m not sure how foreign media/culture are making an impact on American culture, but I do know in the entertainment industry, some American shows/music are very similar to what is seen in Asia.
I've also watched Parasite, and I was rather surprised to see how many awards it received. I wouldn't say I'd want to watch it again, but it was definitely impactful and conveyed the director's intent very well. I also already knew a few of the actors before watching the movie, and was amazed to see how completely they had taken on their characters' personalities. While I do believe Parasite and Bong Joon Ho deserve awards for such skill, I feel like Joker had the potential to win as well. I believe foreign media/culture is definitely seeping into America, especially Asian culture (bubble tea, various foods, K-pop and such, now film, etc.). I wonder what about Asian culture is helping it become so popular here. On a side note though, Bong Joon Ho is an interesting figure--his films have encompassed controversies that the South Korean government has deemed inappropriate in the past, so he was once blacklisted in SK for being too liberal. I'd recommend watching "Okja," another one of his films, that deals with controversy on animal rights and environmental issues.
2019 was a really interesting year for movies. I watched Joker, 1917, Jojo Rabbit, Parasite, The Lighthouse, Ford v. Ferrari, Bombshell, Knives Out, Marriage story, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood this year. All of these movies were oscar-nominated, and all of them were incredible in their own way. Parasite was a wonderful movie, it was written and shot and acted with so much precision and care, and you can dig into every scene and find something interesting to talk about, but I could say the same thing about any of the other movies on that list. Parasite winning the Oscar takes nothing away from the other works, and I think part of the beauty of art is embracing every creator and story and supporting one another, instead of focusing on the competition. Stories and films are human. They transcend language and borders. Jojo Rabbit was about a German family, 1917 was about British Soldiers, The Lighthouse is Canadian. Our lovely president should recognize that films do not have to be American, or about Americans, to be amazing.
I had seen news articles on Trump's comments on the movie, but had decided to ignore them because I just didn't want to read his opinion. Seeing what he said about the movie makes me think that was a correct choice. Seeing Trump dismiss something like Parasite, a wonderful movie that was shot beautifully and which critiqued the rigidity of class structure, (Among other things, and those themes all apply to America as well) just because it was a South Korean film just makes me feel even more disappointed in him that I already was. At this point, I feel like he is just trying to gain publicity by being purposely controversial. Parasite deserved the awards it got, and by having an Asian film win the most coveted film award in America is a step in the right direction for our culture.
Unfortunately, I have not seen Parasite yet, but I have heard many positive comments about the movie. Parasite has received a lot of awards and I have heard that I had great cinematography as well. To add on, I have heard that Parasite has a lot of symbolism, and had a great method of showing what the director wanted to say. However, even though I don't have my own opinion because I have not yet watched the movie yet, I have heard a lot about how Parasite would be a fantastic movie for movie critics, but not for the general audience. The movie like I said before has a lot of symbolism, and even though most movie watchers would not understand the reasoning behind each symbolic scene, movie critics dig the symbolic scenes. Similar to what other people have said, I feel like Parasite did a phenomenal job of displaying asian cultures, specifically the Korean culture. The film has informed people who were not very informed of the asian culture in the past, and has fed people with more knowledge about other cultures.
I personally have watched Parasite a couple of times and everytime, it brings up topics that I feel like are disturbing in society because of how true and scary the class struggles and differences can be. The impact that the movie has on me, indicates just how well thought out the movie was and how artistic it is. As the Academy Awards are an award show celebrating accomplishments by movies and their staff, I believe that Parasite was a good candidate for winning the best picture. While there were other good movies, it is entirely up to the Academy and there will be people complaining either way but from what I saw, most people praised the movie. This is the first time that a foreign film won best picture but I feel as if we should be congratulating them for their accomplishments, not scowling at how they have beat us this year. I believe that the comments made by President Trump were not appropriate as they put down another nation and their accomplishment as a way to promote blind patriotism and pride in our country. We should be prideful in our own accomplishments, but there is no need to bash other countries for their own.
While I have yet to watch Parasite myself, I have only heard raving reviews and overwhelmingly positive responses to the film (I want to watch it very badly). Clearly, Parasite deserves all the hype since it won so many esteemed awards at the Oscars. This was a major step in the right direction for foreign films and the whole industry in general. I feel like the film industry in America is very centralized around English movies, pushing aside many amazing productions from other countries. Parasite's success has opened the door for many more foreign works as well as opened the eyes of many Americans to a whole other side of the movie industry that we are missing just due to the deep rooted lack of diversity in the industry. It is no secret that Hollywood has struggled with diversity, even in today's time, and this year's Oscar was no different, which could be easily seen by the many people expressing outrage at the lack of female nominees in the best directors and Natalie Portman's amazing outfit tribute to them. Therefore, Parasite's wins should be even more greatly celebrated and will hopefully inspire a shift away from still restricted realm of Hollywood. Trump's comments are unacceptable and unfortunately, not surprising. It is definitely well known that Trump lacks a filter and blindly holds America above other countries, and his response to Parasite is another horrible example of this. He should be praising the success of the foreign film and striving to promote diversity, but instead only comes up with racist remarks. Luckily, I think many people are now used to ignoring Trump and will celebrate and watch Parasite no matter what he says. I really hope I can get around to watching it soon!
