China's Increasing Threats to Taiwan's Independence

Taiwan's independence has been under question for several decades, with many countries agreeing with world power, China, that it is China's territory under its "One China Principle." However, while the Communist Party of China claims that Taiwan a part of China, it has never ruled it, as Taiwan has its own established government.

As of last year, China has increased flights over Taiwan's air defense zone, which is seen as an act of aggression and threatening Taiwan's independence. In January, China consecutively flew over a dozen People's Liberation Army aircraft towards Taiwan. However, the US and Taiwan have good relations, which is a reason why China has not already taken Taiwan. If China continues exhibiting aggression towards Taiwan, it is likely that the US will intervene in some way (although this alliance is not promised).

According to both China and Taiwan, they both would like to pursue their agenda without any force. However, with China wanting Taiwan under its control and Taiwan wanting to continue self-governing, it is highly unlikely that this tension will end without any form of conflict, with even war being a possible outcome.

Looking at a map, Taiwan is tiny and China is huge. Taiwan doesn't stand a chance against China, I understand why their connection to the US is so important to them. The US is an ally to Taiwan in effort to maintain peace and stability in Asia. They assist them in their military defense so issues such as this one do not occur. I am in agreement that the US would likely intervene in some way if China asserts itself over Taiwan, because an attack on Taiwan would be a threat to US control as well. The aid towards Taiwan started in the Donal Trump presidency, and luckily for them, Biden says he will continue. Hopefully, these tensions are not to last long.

The US and Taiwan relationship is what is really keeping Taiwan safe, at this point in time, China is almost hoping the US will turn a blind eye to this aggression, which I doubt they will do. At the end of the day, China is looking at either capturing Taiwan and damaging their relationship with the US, or leaving Taiwan alone and keeping their current relationship with the US. Taking the pros and cons of the situation, I highly doubt this will end in a war as China does not want any sort of confrontation with the USA, because even if it doesn't end in a war, trade tariffs could be put up hurting China's economy. At the end of the day I think this will be solved peacefully.
