As Joe Biden prepares to enter the White House, he has had to choose who will help him in his Presidency. So far he has chosen Antony Blinken as Secretary of State, Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of Homeland Security, and obviously Kamala Harris as his Vice President. Over the next few months we will see the completion of President-Elect Biden’s cabinet.
Biden has announced that he will have an all female communications team in the White House. Leading this team will be Jennifer Psaki as press secretary who is a veteran of the Obama administration. Biden believes that “communicating directly and truthfully to the American people is one of the most important duties of a president,” which contrasts significantly with Trump's administration where 7 are criminally charged. Biden plans to advocate for women during his presidency as seen by his White House communications team choices. Psaki sees her job as a way to rebuild the trust of the American People and that she plans to make the agenda of Biden and Harris more accessible to the public.
Each of Biden’s picks has great experience in government and many of his choices worked in Obama’s cabinet as well. Experience is what is important when holding government positions because you need to be trained in practice if you are to succeed.
Do you approve of Biden's cabinet decisions?

I think that is good for the Biden administration to contain experience people. I just fear that it could seem like the Obama administration 2.0 as member of Biden's administration seemed have been involved with the obama administration. It is comforting to known that Biden's administration is experienced and less likely to fall to criminal charges. I suspect it will not contain a large amount of turn over. I like the steps that Biden is taking to include diversity in his administration but I hope it contains ideological diversity. I want Biden to stick to his claim of adding a Trump voter to his cabinet
I think it's wonderful that Biden has selected women for his cabinet, and that some (like Neera Tanden and Linda Thomas-Greenfield) are people of color. Like the blog post and Liam's comment say, I feel much more at ease knowing that Biden's administration will both be experienced in government, and also unlikely to be charged criminally. In general, I think the messages and values that are coming from Biden and his team are positive (ie. acknowledging climate change, advocating for women, etc.) and I look forward to seeing these changes in 2021.
I think inviting diversity and representation is just as important as finding people with experience and expertise. So Biden's choices are reflecting a positive start, as well as hope for active movement and changes that will be advocated for from him and his administration. And I think this is even more important considering the transition we are experiencing, and will continue to experience, from such a different presidency during the 2016-2020 term. I am curious to see what changes come in the future, but for now I see it as a necessary positive start.
Seeing that racial and gender diversity in representing the country is at the forefront of Biden's presidential agenda is an encouraging sight and a nice turn of change from the last 4 years. Choosing deeply experienced members from a vast array of different backgrounds is in my opinion what future presidents should begin striving for. With influxes of migrants and cultures intermingling within our country, the only option to best represent the American people is to have this diverse cabinet/presidential administration. Diversity is a change that has slowly grasped the nation and along with it our governmental needs to make the necessary changes to accommodate to it. It is only then that our government can best listen and represent the people. What Biden is doing with his administration should serve as a role model for future U.S. presidents.
So far, I think Biden has made excellent picks for his cabinet. Generally, everyone seems to be well-qualified for their position with a experience in public service. Already, the Biden administration looks to be more prepared to address America's issues than the Trump administration. However, I do have an issue with Biden's communications team. Though I wholeheartedly support Biden's advocacy for women and am confident that every team member will be competent, on principle, I am against the idea of an all-female team, or any team decided on the basis of demographics. I am a firm believer in equality of opportunity, and I think people should be selected for the job based on merit alone, especially in the context of government. In an ideal world, the business of governing the nation would be completely separated from politics. In my opinion, Biden's announcement seems to be more of a political statement than anything else. Ultimately, if he genuinely wants to fight for gender equality, I think appointing an all-female communications team is not the right way to do it.
Watching new information coming out about Biden's pick for his cabinet has made me excited about the diverse group of people that Biden is including. It is very important that we have more diversity in positions of power because the reality is that representation matters. I have also read articles of some of the people he has chosen, and it is refreshing to see some qualified people that will be in his cabinet. I look forward to seeing what they do during his presidency.
I believe that Biden's cabinet will be very effective and a change for the better. Not only does it give women a more representation/influence in the government, but it also proves their competence and will move the public opinion a bit closer to the goal of true gender equality. It's pretty likely that at least one of these women will later run for president like Hillary Clinton did after serving in the Obama administration, and perhaps will have more success than she did.
One thought that came to my mind upon first reading this is a possible misconception that some people (ie, Trump supporters) might get. Considering that Biden has had past accusations of touching women and stuff like that, it's possible that some Americans will get the wrong idea of Biden appointing an all-female team.
I think that Biden has made some really good picks for his cabinet so far. Everyone seems to be well thought out, adequately researched, and extremely qualified for their positions. There is a lot of good diversity and representation as well (especially with his all-female communication team). I definitely see where Eric is coming from in his somewhat negative response to the all female team, especially with his point about how equal representation means equality between genders, not just front loading women to make up for the lack of women on Trump's team. That being said, if all of the women are qualified, which they all seem to be, I see no reason why they wouldn't do a good job in their roles. For me, personally, I see the all-women communications team as a sign that Biden is already making moves to reverse some of the inequality Trump brought during his term and that makes me excited to see what he plans to do next.
