Tens of thousands of Mexican migrants arrested near US border

In a span of four weeks, ending March 3rd, 100,000 migrants were caught near the US-Mexico border. The number of migrant children alone has tripled.

With Biden's plans to make sure migrants experience a humane and legal process to becoming a US citizen, authorities are struggling to provide the appropriate resources for the people arrested and placed in detention. Due to the lasting pandemic, these migrants have no choice but to stay in these temporary jails. It is legal only to keep them in for 72 hours, but at the moment that doesn't feel reasonable to these border protection agencies as Covid-19 continues to restrict the number of spaces they can give. A CBP spokesperson previously said, "The unique challenges of the pandemic require additional authorities, such as the CDC order known as Title 42, to allow  DHS to effectively protect both the health and safety of the migrants and our communities form the spread of COVID=19. The border is not open, and the vast majority of people are being returned under Title 42." The Biden administration is making a few exceptions though where in specific cases, certain adults are being allowed to stay. Unlike the previous Trump administration, Biden changed a part of their policy so that children could stay without being turned back instantly.

Mexico also hasn't been dealing with the pandemic well with their worsening economic conditions. Ironically, the Mexican President has openly stated that they are doing better than the US in terms of controlling the virus in late February of this year. Though Mexico only vaccinated less than 1% of their population, their reason for it lies on rich countries apparently "hoarding" these vaccines.

Nevertheless, administration officials are quickly making an effort to improve the communication between the Border Patrol and health department while also accelerating the building of more facilities to hold the thousands of children that need to find relatives or foster parents.

Even so, the number of undocumented immigrants is increasing rapidly, and so is the pressure on President Biden and his administration.
