Recently, many trends have been started on Instagram to cope with the social distancing. Instead of going outside to socialize, a lot of people have been staying at home and have been participating in small events that have been flowing throughout social media.

One Instagram trend that started about a week ago was a chain of multiple people drawing a food or an object. Someone would draw a food, for example an orange, and would tag 5 people. Those 5 people would have to draw the same food and tag 5 more people.

Another trend that started very recently was the Until Tomorrow challenge. The Until Tomorrow challenge encourages users to post an embarrassing, funny, or unflattering post on their account for 24 hours. Those who liked the photo were nominated to do the same, and the chain continues.

Many of these trends and challenges have brought people together and seems like it will continue to do so.

1. Did you participate in any of these challenges?

2. Do you think that this is a good method to practice social distancing?

I personally haven't gotten involved (despite being tagged :/) because I am a horrible artist AND I really don't like chain mail :/ However, I appreciated the intent and it was pretty interesting and fun to see others drawings and how creative people could be :) I think that was a great method to get involved with social distancing and since school is now closed to at least 5/1 I'm sure that many more people will come up with more games and methods for our community to get involved virtually.

On that note, just a little shameless self promo, but if you follow @smuhsd.uasb on instagram we're coming up with district wide events for everybody to get involved with to stay connected :)

I haven't personally participated in these trends either, but I do think they are a great way for people and friends to connect while being stuck at home. I think social media, in general, has really helped people stay in touch with those around them. Not to mention, I have seen so many art, cooking, and fitness videos, all encouraging kids at home to try it out themselves and share their results. I think all of the Instagram trends not only allow individuals to connect but also somewhat help people take their minds off the current situation we are in.

I participated in answering riddles since those are always fun but I have not done any of the artist challenges. I think this is a great way for people to come together and create fun activities online. It also helps people to talk to those who they have not been in touch with and simply enjoy the small things in life.

1. I have participated in some of these trends, mainly because it gave me a chance to embarrass myself, but I think it is a kind of lifeline for some people at this point. I personally love not having to leave my house, but I can understand why others are struggling so much. I think even the virtual interaction can be beneficial so people don't feel so alone all the time, and aren't encouraged to break their own quarantine.

Although I personally avoid social media, I definitely see the appeal of these trends and I appreciate how the internet community as a whole is coming together in this new age of social distancing. I have been on Youtube a lot more than Instagram where many Youtubers are encouraging people to stay home if they are able to, and to practice good hygiene. Some of my favorite Youtubers have been leading by example, staying home and making videos about the different activities they are finding to do at home in this scary time. I have a new appreciation for the internet and how it can bring us together when we all have to stay home, in a situation that may have been very lonely, and still isn't the best, but at least we can connect with each other and people all around the world through the internet and social media

Yes, I participated in these trends. At first I was so confused. I was like, “Why are people drawing fruits on their stories? Why are people posting baby pictures on their stories? Why are people posting pictures that normally go on private accounts on their mains? Why are people doing push-ups?” But once I got tagged I just did them too. I mean, what else are we supposed to do to entertain ourselves? Yeah, those trends are a little weird; they were trends from like 7th grade. But we are so bored so I get it. I wouldn’t say its a good method for social distancing but it’s a way to keep ourselves entertained during this time.

I haven't participated in this trend and don't really plan on either. I can see why people would find these challenges fun but I don't have a need to participate in them. I don't know if it is a good way to practice social distancing but it is a good way for people to stay entertained during social distancing. People are allowed to post during an uneventful time and stay in touch with friends without physically being with them. The challenges were fun for a while, but hopefully they start to fade later on in the quarantine.

I haven’t really participated in these trends but I think it’s a fun and healthy reaction to everything going on. I think we should really focus on the bright spots that we can find during all this, whether it be drawing a tomato on your story or posting a baby picture. Even if it seems silly and mindless, if it takes your mind off of everything and allows you to relax and be happy for a bit, then why not? Especially with the social distancing, I think it’s a good way to make us all still feel connected. I also think having access to the Internet and social media to find ways stay busy and active during the shelter in place is also a little upside; I feel like a lot of us are going to become a lot better chefs after this or pick up a new hobby or two.
