School Shooting in Kentucky Was Nation’s 11th of Year. It Was Jan. 23.

On Tuesday, 2 teenagers were killed and 18 were injured in a school shooting in Benton, Kentucky. So far, this is the 11th school shooting recorded since January 1st, 2018.  Katherine W. Schweit, a former senior F.B.I. official, said, “We have absolutely become numb to these kinds of shootings, and I think that will continue.” According to the governor of Kentucky, the gunman was a 15-year-old student. He was taken into custody and will be tried for 2 counts of murder and several counts of attempted murder. However, the authorities have not decided whether or not to try him as an adult or as a juvenile.

Last year, a bill allowing people with concealed-carry permits to take weapons onto public school campuses was considered, but it did not pass. This year, a similar bill, but for college campuses and certain government building, is being considered.

In my opinion, this will probably not affect the passage (or veto) of the bill for concealed-carry permits on college campuses. Benton is a small town, and the legislator of Kentucky have many other things to take into consideration. I was actually unaware of the previous 10 shootings that have happened this year, but I think media should have covered it more, even if no one died. This potential bill is definitely something that will affect the future of carrying weapons on campus, even in other states.

- Do you think the shooter should be tried as an adult or a juvenile?

- Do you think the bill will pass this year?

- How might the bill affect other states who have tried to pass similar bills in the past? Will it encourage them to try again? Or will it deter people from voting on it?

I didn't hear of the 10 shootings before this one this year either, but I think that the fact that this one was so publicized, and especially because it happened at a school, this will definitely at least be brought into discussion when considering the new bill that is coming up. It could also bring attention to the other shootings that have occurred this year, so for those who are trying to pass the bill, it's surely a point that they'll have to consolidate or compromise on. There's also the fact that Trump didn't even address this issue of the shooting until over a day after it happened, which is kind of a reflection on how much importance Trump places on the issue (not a lot).

On a side note, I have no idea what the hell the purpose of a concealed carry on public schools bill is even for. Like, sure you can say self defense, but seriously if there's a shooter on the school are you really going to draw your weapon and initiate a gunfight or something? And don't even get me started on the point that having concealed carry deters shooters from entering; if someone is mentally deranged enough to shoot up a school I doubt they actually care about the possibility of other people carrying a weapon.

The shooter ended the lives of 2 young teenagers who had a whole life ahead of them, he crushed the hearts of many families and created a sense of insecurity throughout the small town in Kentucky. The shooter deserves no mercy and ought to be tried as an adult. I am so tired of these cases occurring and then the courts feeling pity towards the shooter and behaving as though one should sympathize with the shooter because they are "mentally ill". I completely respect those who are mentally ill and do believe cases involving them ought to be handled in a different way, but we cannot keep justifying such horrific tragedies. This is the 11th school shooting of the year and we are only about 4 weeks into January. It is OBVIOUS something is NOT right in our nation and it needs to be addressed NOW. I find the bill SO hypocritical and cannot fathom how anyone in the federal government could ever think that by allowing more people to bring guns into public areas will enhance safety, like what???? The problem here is clearly the lack of stricter gun regulations, not vice versa.

I think it is so sad that there has been 11 school shootings and this is the first one I've heard about. School shootings have become so normal now that they aren't brought as much attention as they used to. Also like Jason said, there's no real purpose for the concealed weapon to be allowed in places. We can't fight fire with fire, and that's what they're doing. Guns are becoming a bigger problem so there shouldn't be a need to allow them in even more places. I also think the shooter should go to Juvie and once he turns 18 to go to adult prison and have his case re-examined.

There have been so many shootings happening, and the fact that this incident happened at a school is even more frightening. I do believe the shooter should be tried as an adult because his actions in this case was unacceptable, and he needs to be held accountable. I'm really shocked that within the first month of the year there are so many shootings. This proves that something needs to be changed and by allowing people to bring guns around in public areas doesn't seem like it's going to fix the problem. I know gun control is a really controversial topic, but personally I'm not even sure I feel safe anymore out in public.
