Trump’s Approval Rating Drops to Lowest Level Yet in New NBC News/WSJ Poll

NBC News

According to new polls conducted by NBC News, Trump's current job approval rating has reached the lowest of his presidency. 38% of the population (with a margin of error of 3.27%) approve while 58% disapprove. NBC accredits this decrease to his recent claims about former presidents not calling families of fallen soldiers, dismaying the family of Sgt. La David. T. Johnson by saying that he "must've known what he signed up for" (NBC News), as well as members of the Republican party criticizing him. The article further breaks down approval ratings by political party affiliation and both Democrats and Independents have an overall higher disapproval rating than approval, while Republicans have a significantly higher approval rating than disapproval.

Trump frequently angers the public through his verbal assertions (i.e. the aforementioned incident with Sgt. Johnson, his criticism of Puerto Rican leadership during times of crisis). Do you think that his approval rating will continue to fall as a result, or do you think that his firm supporters will uphold/increase the ratings over time?

I do not think his approval ratings will get much lower, unless a major catastrophe (namely economic) besets the country. The majority of Trump supporters are very staunch and loyal, and distrust all major media or people telling them that he is doing a poor job. However, if the country starts to hit a hard patch economically, there is a chance that his supporter would jump ship, thinking he didn't follow through on the economic promise he ran on. Even if his administration continues to struggle as it is, he can simply claim he is doing a fantastic job, and his supporters will continue to believe him, as they always have; especially considering the news sources they frequent, such as info wars or Breitbart, always backs him up, regardless. As such, I don't think his polls will slip drastically from here, even if they do decrease. That said, I also don't think they will pick up very much, as I doubt the rest of the country will change their minds and begin to believe that he is doing a good job, especially given his demeanor and actions (or lack of them, in some cases).

I agree with Gabriel that Trump supporters are very loyal. At this point, he could probably spit in a veteran’s face (which isn’t too far from saying what he said about Sgt. La David. T. Johnson) and supporters would still try to justify it. However, his approval ratings could come up or down significantly based on what independents think and his independent supporters have significantly decreased as more time passes. He could gain more libertarian and Republican support if tax reforms are successful or lessens government regulation as a whole, though as we have seen it has been very difficult for Republicans to agree, much less pass huge reforms (see health care). At this point, it’d be virtually impossible for Trump to gain any Democratic support, and honestly I’m surprised that NBC is saying that even 7% supports him (maybe these people are unaware of the values of the Democratic party).

Trump's approval ratings have been consistently downhill ever since his inauguration, and while his absolutely appalling behavior as President is keeping 90% of Democrats against him, the Congressional deadlock and inability to repeal Obamacare is probably driving more Republicans away as well. It's true that there are the extremely loyal supporters that will back up Trump regardless of how he acts. However, Gallup telephone polls showed that his approval rating dropped to 34% as early as mid-August, suggesting that his fanatic fan base leans towards rural areas.
I feel that the Trump presidency will cause a significant increase in Democratic voter turnout in the 2018 and 2020 elections as registered voters are determined to ensure that such a fiasco is effectively controlled, and doesn't happen again.

I agree with the above comments that many Trump supporters are very loyal. I do think that Trump has disappointed a lot of his supporters including myself with a lot of his policies during his presidency. His involvement in foreign affairs, trade policies and immigration policies are some of the main reasons why I do not approve of him anymore as I believe his policies are more radical than what he proposed in his campaign. Because of this I am not surprised that his approval rating have been dropping, however there will always be that very loyal coalition that will be on his side no matter what he does.

I do think that his approval rating will drop with each hurtful comment that he makes, but the comments that he makes will always be seen, by some people, as a good thing. They show how "anti-establishment" and "upfront" he is. By continuing to make comments criticizing people, his most loyal supporters may see him as even more trustworthy. His ratings may be down in the Democratic party, but they are up in the Republican party. His ratings may suffer from individual instances and actions, but his strongest base supporters typically have the ability to see past such statements within a few weeks. I don't think that his ratings will permanently stay low.

I agree with the previous points made that Presidents Trump's approval rating will keep on decreasing. Sure the trump supporters are loyal towards him, but if Trump keeps on disappointing his followers by not keeping what he promised to do during the presidential election, his approval rating will just keep on decreasing. However, for anything to drastically change I believe that there has to be some type of huge scandal or something in that direction for his most loyal supporters to leave him as many of them probably are stuck in their own political bubble where they can't see all the criticism he is getting.

As much as I'd like to say, "it can't get any worse," with a character like Trump, one can never be too certain. With this constant downward trend, it is uncertain whether or not it will ever go back up. As Genevieve noted, although the % of people who approve him decrease, the ones that still agree with him are believing in him more and more. The quantity of his supporters decrease, but the quality has increased. While it may be possible to increase this quantity if he can appeal to a large majority through a big change, with scandals going on like the current Russian investigation, it is likely to keep going down.

I agree that Trump's ratings will continue to go down or stay the same as they are if things continue as they have been. Because he makes comments daily that anger or offend people it is no surprise that his ratings are not high. However, I feel like people are getting used to the comments he makes so to make the ratings go down further there would need to be something especially dramatic.

I don't think that it's necessarily Trump's comments that have affected his low ratings, at least not currently; while his comments may have made him initially unpopular, I feel like now his low ratings are more based on goals he promised but has not yet accomplished and his poor handling of certain domestic issues. I think that is what changed the opinions of some of his initial Republican supporters, and I agree that that number has become stable and will likely only show a real change if he does something dramatic, as others have said, that will either be so negative that his loyal supporters will start to disapprove of him, or will cause some of his previous supporters to start approving of him again, such as if he were to fulfill one of his promised goals that previously failed.

Like many others before me have commented, I don’t believe that Trump’s approval ratings will drop any lower, especially among Republicans, or increase significantly among Democrats. Although Trump’s verbal attacks and assertions are extremely unpopular on both sides, he has been making similar comments throughout his campaign and into his presidency; it’s unlikely that any of his recent comments will have a significant effect on his approval rating. I agree with Gabriel that a portion of Trump’s supporters will remain loyal no matter what he does, as a partial result of their insulation from/distrust of the mainstream media. However, an economic downturn that affects the United States at large has the potential of dramatically lowering Trump’s ratings, as he could be seen by his voters as not fulfilling his campaign promises.

At this point I believe most people know what kind of president Trump is and whether or not they support him, and most of his supporters are very loyal and ready to support him no matter what. His ratings will now only drop with peoples' gradual realizations of his lack of credibility, if he doesn't go through with his promises.
