Earlier tonight, Obama ordered 300,000 more troops to Afghanistan, claiming that America's "security is at stake". This buildup will begin almost immediately, with 100,000 troops being sent before Christmas. The rest of the troops will be sent at "the fastest pace possible". The first year will cost $30 billion alone. Obama's intentions are to bring to war to a sharp and successful conclusion. This certainly isn't the first time Obama has sent troops to Afghanistan- there are now 71,000 as compared to the 34,000 that were in Afghanistan during the time of his inauguration. Additionally, Obama has asked NATO to send between 5,000 and 10,000 troops to Afghanistan to help end the war quickly. Obama is pushing the war in Afghanistan so heavily because he believes it is a war worth fighting and ending, as compared to the war in Iraq (which he opposes).
To give Americans what they want to hear, he stated that troops will "begin" to come home after eighteen months.
Is Obama making the right decisions as commander in chief?
